Take that sudden feeling of emptiness and multiply it by a few million users, and you have the story of Claude Fable 5, the most powerful model Anthropic had ever put in front of the general public. It shipped on June 9, 2026 with full fanfare: state-of-the-art performance on nearly every benchmark, and downright brutal at software engineering, vision, and knowledge work. Stripe went so far as to say it "compressed months of engineering into days." And then, barely three days later, the lights went out all at once.
What exactly happened
On June 12, the US government slapped emergency export controls on Fable 5 and its bigger sibling Mythos 5, forcing Anthropic to restrict access for foreign nationals. The trigger was as concrete as it was uncomfortable: researchers at Amazon found a way to get around the model's safety guardrails by asking it to identify software vulnerabilities, and in one case it went as far as generating code that demonstrated how to exploit one of them. Because the order took effect immediately and Anthropic had no reliable way to verify each user's nationality in real time, it made the drastic call to suspend access for absolutely everyone. A frontier model, silenced overnight over a national security matter.
How and why it came back
For 19 days, Fable 5 sat in limbo while Anthropic worked on a real fix rather than a cosmetic patch to get by. The company built an improved safety classifier, designed specifically against the bypass technique from the report, that blocks that behavior in more than 99% of cases. On June 30 the Department of Commerce lifted the export controls, and on July 1 Fable 5 was available globally again on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork, with AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry coming back online afterward. It still costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 for output, less than half the price of Mythos Preview, and it keeps classifiers that route to Claude Opus 4.8 when they detect sensitive requests.
